At only seven years old, this year’s recipient, Eva Towle, and her family have endured more hardships than the average person.
By age four, Eva began feeling unwell, complaining of mild fevers, aching in her legs, and weight loss. While other young children were enjoying the last bits of summer, Eva - unknowingly - was beginning her journey fighting a deadly disease.
Believe it to be symptoms of the heavily spread COVID-19, Eva continued her young life as normal.
As these symptoms continued, her parents began to feel concerned that the problem might be more severe. Eva was then brought to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. By October 1st, 2021, Eva and her parents got the news that she was diagnosed with High-Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
For the next two and a half years, Eva endured a difficult journey through chemotherapy, sedations, hospital stays, fevers, and NG (nasogastric tubes) tubes. These challenges caused her to miss most of her junior kindergarten year and significant portions of her senior kindergarten and first-grade schooling.
Ready to get back to life as normally as possible, Eva was due to complete her treatment on February 15th, 2024. However, during her final lumbar puncture in January 2024, a few abnormal cells were found before she could ring the bell.
Further testing confirmed a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), specifically in her central nervous system (CNS) via her cerebrospinal fluid.
Instead of celebrating the end of her treatment, Eva was abruptly thrust back into an intense and grueling battle. Her new treatment plan demanded countless hospital stays, powerful doses of chemotherapy, and radiation that have taken a heavy toll on her small body.
At just 7 years old and in the second grade, Eva has shown remarkable resilience, enduring this overwhelming journey filled with both heartbreaking setbacks and hard-fought victories. The road ahead remains long and uncertain, with an estimated 2 to 2.5 years of treatment still to go. Eva's strength and spirit shine through even in the face of such immense challenges.
This year, Julia’s Journey is working to lessen the financial strain on this family. We are immensely grateful for the ability to provide support to this incredible family.
Congratulations to our 2024 Julia's Journey Champions, Josh Williams, Trevor Chicky, Michael Bisson, and Tyler Stranges!
